51 Racers on the Roe Jan Raise $2,574

In a canoe and kayak race sponsored by the Roe Jan Creek Boat Club Sunday, more than 50 people raced down a seven-mile stretch of the Roeliff Jansen Kill. The race, a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society, raised $2,574.

51 people—plus a few rogue untimed competitors—started off just below Bingham’s Mills on the stream Sunday morning. Some paddlers capsized during the first two sets of rapids around the bend from the start and many overturned in the water downstream.

The competitors managed their way through several patches of whitewater and portaged around one logjam on their way toward the finish line at the boat club’s property, where the Roeliff Jansen Kill flows into the Hudson River.

Among the competitors were 15 two-person canoe teams, 18 single kayakers, one solo canoeist and one two-person kayak team.

The highest fund-raising team was Tom and Chris Hoilund, who placed ninth in the two-person canoe division and raised $600 in sponsorships for the cause.

In the two-person canoe division, Nick Zachos and Sam Merrett took first place with a time of 1 hour, 13 minutes and 45 seconds; Ken Hollenbeck and Jeremy Funkhauser came in second place with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes and 25 seconds; and Austin Isler and Dan Darmiento took third place with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes and 11 seconds.

In the single kayak division, Mark Reinhardi took first place, paddling the course in 1 hour, 27 minutes and 16 seconds; Amy Walsh took second place with a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and 35 seconds; and Bryan Hunter came in third with a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and 54 seconds.

The members of the boat club wish to thank all the racers, everyone who donated and everyone who helped bring the tradition of the Roe Jan Canoe Race back to life, including the property owners at Bingham’s Mills, who graciously granted access to their property for the race.
